Jean Shorts

It’s official – California Gurls by Katy Perry is my summer anthem, and when I listen to it while I get ready in the morning, it totally inspires the way I dress. Mainly, jean shorts. I don’t know why they haven’t come into my life before now, but now that they’re here, they are here to stay. “Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top,” may work for the beach, but you may want more coverage up top for many other situations. I’ve been favoring a loose white tee, maybe even tucked in with a brown belt. Finish it off with some cowboy boots or havaianas, and you’re ready to go!

Like this model here (left), who was captured by fashion blog Garance Doré in NYC, rocking out some very tiny jean shorts.

Or if you’re feeling daring, you could go all Katy Perry (right) and opt for the ever-popular “cupcake bra” she sports in her “California Gurls” video,

However, HER daisy dukes are covered in crystals, so obviously she’s going for a more vivacious look. Or maybe it’s the hair that makes it stand out. Hmm. Anyways, here are a bunch of celebrities and fashionistas wearing the jean shorts trend in their own ways: dressed up, dressed down, belts, beach, street-chic, casual, and even for a movie role. If you’re looking for some shorts that don’t break the bank, check out the slideshow on Teen Vogue, “Under $100: Summer Shorts,” some of which are pictured below.

Celebrities

Cameron Diaz is on set (which explains the midriff-baring pose), Jennifer Aniston is on set, and Kate Bosworth is at Coachella. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Vanessa’s look, although I think the overall outfit is cute and would work much better with a different pair of shorts. When the pockets are hanging out, it just looks trashy. Cameron’s heels and hiked up shirt are a bit much for me, and Sienna looks straight up sloppy. Unfortunately we can’t really see Jennifer’s whole outfit, but she doesn’t look bad, and Kate is wearing the shorts in an edgier, fashion-forward way, trendy as always and showcasing a more polished outfit. But in my opinion, Gisele is the hands down winner. She looks awesome (but doesn’t she always?). Her jeans are tiny, but nothing is hanging out, and her floaty top gives her look a more casual air, while her belt ties it all together nicely. Topped with those sunglasses and that beachy hair, she’s got the California Girl look down pat.

For a more dressed up or fashion forward look, try these shorts with a dressier top and interesting shoes and accessories to make the style more street-chic. (Left to right: JCrew chambray short, Old Navy denim short, and a model captured on the fashion blog Stylesightings)

For a more casual look, try some shorts that look more like these with casual tops and accessories. (Left to right: Pacsun Bullhead boyfriend jean short, Aeropostale light wash denim short, and Hollister La Jolla jean short)

Now you should be good to go! But please, always remember, make sure your shorts fit your body and fit correctly. I don’t care if you’re fat, skinny, curvy, athletic, whatever – ill-fitting shorts are always a no-no. Even if you’re super tiny, it can still hang out. For example…

This is a gorgeous, beautiful girl! And she’s very tiny. But if I can see the bottom of your butt, I can see too much. There should never be butt cheek hanging out of your shorts. You look a little bit skanky.

I am so happy to read this. This is the kind of manual that needs to be given and not the random misinformation that is at the other blogs. Appreciate your sharing this best doc.
